Abigail [Gates], wife of Lieut. Medad Benton was born ca. 1735 in Preston, CT, daughter of Robert Gates and Mary [Clark] Gates who were married in 1726. Although, there is no marriage record, Abigail Gates married Medad Benton ca.1755 in Preston, CT. Their marriage is proven by two deeds dated 1760 and 1763 in the Preston Land Records. She has Mayflower ancestry through her grandmother Elizabeth [Leonard] Clark who died circa Jan. 1760 Norwich, CT. Her probate file shows the names of her heirs and her land was divided equally among them, including the grand-children and Abigail was one of them.
