TONKAWA — Melvin "Cowboy" S. Allen, resident of Tonkawa, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Ponca City Medical Center. He was 59.

A wake will be held at the Tonkawa tribal gymnasium Thursday evening, April 23, and all day Friday with a feast Saturday, April 25, at noon; the funeral will follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Tonkawa Funeral Home.

Melvin was born May 2, 1949, in Pawnee, the son of Melvin S. and Gloria M. Moncooyea Allen Sr. He attended school in Enid and worked in the oil fields as a welder.

He enjoyed playing golf and watching football.

Survivors include his brothers, Charles Paul and Samuel Joseph Allen of Tonkawa; his sisters, Joyce Marie Beard of Fort Worth, Texas, and Tina, Reba, Eva Mae and Stacy Denise Allen, all of Tonkawa; nephews, nieces and numerous other family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carline Allen; his son, Melvin S. Allen III; his daughter, Tammy Bernice Allen; and his parents.
