Michael Wallace DeBernard, 84, of Suffolk passed away at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. Mr. DeBernard had been in the hospital for the past month.

Mr. DeBernard was born on Dec. 9, 1925, in Washington, D.C., and lived there until he was drafted in World War II.

After his marriage to Shirley Mae Anderson, they lived at 965 North Lebanon St., Arlington, for over 60 years. They then moved to Lake Prince Woods Retirement Community, Suffolk, in January 2008.

Mr. DeBernard was a World War II veteran, serving in Italy. After his return, he attended Strayer College of Accounting. He worked in the federal government for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley; two sons, Michael DeBernard Jr. and his wife Deborah, and David DeBernard and his wife Janet; three daughters, Sharon DeBernard Barnard, Kathy DeBernard Hayden and her husband Paul, and Sandra DeBernard Burke and her husband Brian.

He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Christopher DeBernard, Matthew Barnard, Kristina DeGuzman, Heather Dunnigan, Ashley Hayden, Michelle Burke, Kevin Burke, Cristina Pincolini Chandler and Nicholas Pincolini; and four great-grandchildren, Adam DeGuzman and Abbey, Catlin and Natalie Dunnigan.

Mr. DeBernard is also survived by five brothers, Lewis DeBernard and his wife, Edna, Frederick DeBernard and his wife, Joyce, Richard DeBernard and his wife, Sara, Robert DeBernard and his wife, Laddie, and Carl Joseph DeBernard and his wife, Jackie; and a sister, Dolores Atwood and her husband, Stuart. He is also survived by his brother- and sister-in-law, Roger and Tangie Anderson, and daughter-in-law Christine DeBernard.

Michael was preceded in death by two sisters, Emma DeBernard Lynch and Frances DeBernard Stevens; and a brother, William Henry Sheppard.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 10299 Millbank Road, King George. Viewing will be held at Nash and Slaw Funeral Home, 11089 James Madison Parkway, King George, on Tuesday, July 6, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Girls & Boys Town, The Village of Boys Town, Boystown, Neb. 68010.
