Daughter of Anastasia Perriloux Canulette and James Byron, her second husband. Her father, James Byron, was born in Rhode Island and moved with his parents to Halifax, Novia Scotia, where they had coal mines and were in the freight ship business. He was unhappy because he felt his parents were partial to a young boy that was an apprentice, so he stowed away on one of his father's ships that was going to New Orleans and he never returned to Novia Scotia.
