Pioneer Religious Figure. Born in Mason County, Washington, he was a Native American and member of the Squaxin Island Tribe, Coast Salish. Slocum was introduced to Christianity while working with the missionaries in Washington's Puget Sound Region in the mid-1880s. In 1881, he became ill and subsequently fell into a trance where he felt he was transported to heaven and told to bring his people to a new salvation. Thus he became a reputed holy man and prophet who founded the Indian Shaker Church. Slocum incorporated his religion as a spiritual manifestation way to brush off sin, sickness, or bad feelings. This practice led to the favor of non-natives as well, whom began preaching the Shaker Religion message. The Indian Shaker Religion is still practiced to date in the combines of many traditional native beliefs and customs with Christian beliefs.
