Vernon ThompsonAlpha Tressie Thompson, daughter of Thov and Turine was born on July 22, 1895 in rural Elbow Lake Minnesota. She was one of eight children, being the second youngest of the six girls. Her family lived on a small farm in Minnesota and with the growing family it was necessary for her father to enlarge the house. They raised the roof to make more bedroom space and three of the girls slept temporarily in the granary just below the house, Alice, Effie and Alpha.
It was on one of these nights that Alpha suffered her first attack of epileptic seizure. At that time the doctors and hospitals were not available, too far away, or knew little to treat this or suggest any relief. Her condition grew steadily worse. In 1907 she moved with her family to North Dakota to a small homestead shack. At time went on her seizures became more often and violent. Once she fell on a hot stove and burned her face and arm. Her mother gave her sister Alice the task of watching over Alpha when they would go out in public gatherings as it seems she became more nervous at these times and would always have a seizure. They seemed to affect her kidneys and she got to be quite a chore to care for. Never able to work much, she passed her time doing fancy work, and her work was beautiful. Her illness went over a period of seven years and she passed away at home. Reports of her family said she passed away smiling while telling them of her vision of angels coming.
A transcript of the newspaper clippings in Grandmother Thompson’s records:
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Thompson of Rudiser dies at the home of her parents Sunday evening at eleven o’clock at the age of 16 years and 7 months April 21, 1912. The deceased had not been well for seven years. She was operated on for appendicitis last fall, hoping to get relief, but it did not affect a cure and about a week ago she had to take to her bed and passed away. She leaves a father and mother, one brother and five sisters to mourn her loss. A funeral service was held Thursday afternoon and Rev. S. Yterhus of Wildress officiated. Burial being in the Rudser Cemetery on the East end of her parents farm. (Thompson Cemetery)
Alpha Tressie born July 22, 1895. On Sunday night the death of Miss Alpha Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Thompson of Rudiser. She has been ailing for sometime and was taken with convulsions which was the immediate cause of her death. The funeral was held yesterday by Rev. Yterhus and the body was buried in the cemetery near their farm house.

(As recorded in the family records compiled by Hazel Tappon Leohnard).

Note: The Thompson Family Cemetery is located on what was once known as the Thompson Farm and is still to my knowledge owned by family members. At the time the cemetery was founded it was with the plan of building a Lutheran chucrch there. However, the congregation split and wanted the church to be built several miles away in what was to become the Rudser Church and Cemetery, so not many were buried there after that. The Thompson's took good care of the little cemetery and it is enclosed with a high wire fence.
