W. E. ALLEN

William Edward Allen, son of Thomas J. and Sarah Elizabeth Allen, was born Nov. 23, 1867, in a log house in Whitebreast township, Lucas county, Iowa, and passed away at the home of his son, Edwin, in Lucas, Ia., Sept. 11, 1956, at the age of 88 years, nine months and 18 days.

His mother died when he was four years old. He went to live with Mr. and Mrs. William Tout of Chariton and remained with this family until his father married again.

He attended school at Center, Whitebreast township, Prairie View and Lucas school in Jackson township and business college in Shenandoah.

In January of 1893 he formed a partnership with his father and his brother, W. W. Allen in the general mercantile and farming business.

He was married to Anna M. Taylor of Chariton, April 26, 1893. To this union were born two sons and four daughters, Earl and Edwin of Lucas, Mrs. Ardis Rogers of Des Moines, Mrs. Aileen Penick of Woodburn, Mrs. Mildred Towne of Jamaica and one daughter, who died in infancy.

In the fall of 1905 he moved with his family to Woodburn and again established a mercantile business with his father, T. J. Allen, selling out in the fall of 1907 and moving back to the farm at Lucas. Again, in 1922 he moved to Woodburn and went into the mercantile business as the T. J. Allen and Co.

In the fall of 1927, he sold his business to Luman Scovel of Derby and in the spring of 1928 moved back to the farm at Lucas. On Sept. 22, 1942, Mrs. Allen passed away.

During the years following 1897, Mr. Allen served as township trustee, township clerk, member of the school board, welfare board of Lucas county, county recorder and as a member of the board of supervisors. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, serving as elder and trustee for a number of years.

In 1891 he was accepted as a member in the Masonic Lodge and received his life membership in 1930.

On Dec. 23, 1943, he was married to Mrs. Lillian Reed of Anita, who passed away at Chariton, Feb. 6, 1951, where they had made their home since 1945.

His survivors include five children, 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one brother, W. W. Allen of Lucas.

Like his father, who lived to age of 93, so ends the rich and full life of a man who saw many a crisis and many changes throughout the history of our country.

Funeral services were held at the Miley Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 1956. The Rev. A. E. Beals officiated, followed by a short Masonic service at the grave. The following grandsons acted as pallbearers: Charles A. Rogers, Willard and Gerald Allen, Elwin and Edwin Allen and Ethan Allen Towne. Interment was in the Chariton cemetery.
