Press Democrat, Volume XXXIV, Number 250, 21 October 1908: KIT CARSON'S NIECE CALLED BY DEATH Santa Rosa Woman Dies While on a Visit With Relatives at Chico Recently.
Mrs. Adeline Atkeson, who left here the first of the month for Chico to spend the winter with her grandson, James B. Vest, died suddenly there after only three days illness. The funeral took place at Chico on Monday, October 12, the services being held from the Christian Church. Death was due to the Infirmities of old age. At the time of her death she was aged seventy-eight years and nine months.
Mrs. Atkeson was a native of Howard county, Mo., having been born in 1830. She came to California with her four daughters in 1871, and settled in Lake county, where she lived for a number of years. She then came to Santa Rosa where she lived up to the time of her going to Chico two weeks ago. Mrs. Atkeson was a niece of Kit Carson, the famous scout. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. J.W. West, Mrs. Chris Hammick and Mrs A.M. Robbe, of Chico, and Mrs. L.C. Vest of Santa Rosa. Mrs. Vest and her daughters, the Misses Allene and Clark West went from Santa Rosa to attend the funeral.
