Calvin was born in Blue County, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. Most of Blue County became Bryan County after Oklahoma statehood.

Calvin was listed in the 1855 Choctaw Census for Blue County, living with head of household James Beams. The census lists James Beams, Amy, Emily, Malissa, Lucy, Calvin, David, Josiah, Charles, and Sampson.

Calvin was married to Caroline Foreman, a Cherokee, and they had two daughters. Caroline died in 1872, according to information in their daughter Susie's Dawes Commission papers.

About 1875, Calvin married Eliza Houston Beames. Eliza was his brother David's widow. David had died in 1874 or 1875. This information was provided in Eliza's Dawes Commission testimony. Eliza and Calvin were both Choctaw.
