Also known as Anna Laura, she was the second of eight children. She completed the district schools at Hunt's Corners and attended Ohio Northern University at Ada, Ohio for one term.

She qualified for teaching, but chose instead to engage in county extension work through Ohio State University and to assist her mother in the care of the home.

Laura was confirmed in the Hunt's Corners Reformed Church, was a leader in church activities such as Sunday School, and served as church organist.
