Ruth was the daughter of Robert Lloyd and Anna Ethel Cissell Thompson. She married William Ernest, nicknamed "Doc", Merritt in 1960 in California. They had one daughter in 1963 by the name of Alicia, in California. This was Ruth's first child when she was 43 years of age, something quite uncommon in 1963. She had a great spirit and bravery. I was happy to have known her. I wish she could have always lived next door to me, but life separated us. During the latter part of her life, Ruth worked, at the Thompson Furniture Store in Kentucky five miles outside of Fancy Farm. Her eyesight wasn't what it had been in her younger years and when driving home from work she would count the driveways to find her home. Sometimes she missed the driveway, turning a little too soon or a little too late. It is told that she traveled into and out of the ditch without any concern, apparently happy to just be safely home.
