Ichabod was the son of Job and Amy (Arnold) Burleson. He was the brother of: Eliza Ann (Parker) Burleson, Jeremiah M. Burleson, Timothy J. Burleson, Charles Burleson, Stephen Burleson, Catherine Burleson and Rosette Burleson. He served in the 6th Military Infantry, New Orleans, Louisiana. He is a relative of Ralph Edward Burleson, Sr., who is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.

Enlisted on 17 August 1861 at Saline, Washtenaw County, Michigan; he was residing in Lenawee County, Michigan prior to his enlistment at 20 years of age; mustered in on 20 August 1861, Company F, Michigan 6th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private; died of vulnus sclopetarium (gunshot) in the St. James General Hospital on 15 August 1862 at New Orleans, Louisiana. (The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 records his name as "Burlason, Ekebert." The Record of service of Michigan volunteers in the Civil War, 1861-1865 reports he died of disease which may mean the gunshot wound caused bacterial complications.)
