BIO written by Dessau7, direct descendant. Resources: "1889 Portrait & Biographical Album of Morgan and Scott Counties, Illinois", by Chapman Bros. Publishers, Chicago.

James Hutchison was my 3rd Great Grandfather, married to Elethia Campbell. Elethia is either nicknamed or her name was misspelled as "Elithy" on some documents.

"James Hutchison was born in Breckenridge County, Ky., in 1808, and was married, in Indiana, to Miss Elethia Campbell. This lady was born in North Carolina, and in 1830 they came to Illinois, and settled upon a claim of Government land near Waverly. This the father afterward sold, and entered eighty acres near by, which he improved and lived upon a number of years. About 1837 he moved into the village, and built a carding mill and grist mill.

Rev. James Hutchison was an earnest Christian man, and for many years officiated as a local preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was kind and benevolent, both in his public and private life, gave liberally to those in need, and was successful in business, accumulating a comfortable property.

In 1843, only two months after the death of their twin baby girl Paulina, his wife Elethia passed away, leaving James with seven children, five of whom lived to mature years. In 1844, James Hutchison married Margaret Westfall, and they became the parents of three children: David, Samuel and Melinda.

James Hutchison possessed considerable mechanical genius, had learned the tailor's trade, and was also a millwright. He operated these mills until 1851, in which year the cholera epidemic swept across Morgan County. James Hutchison fell victim to the 1851 Cholera Epidemic only 12 days after the disease took the life of his youngest son, James B. He was only 43 years old."
