CHARLES HASS DIES ON 76th BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
Charles Hass, son of George and Barbara Weimer Hass, was born in Worth county, Missouri, April 8, 1872, and passed away on the 76th anniversary of his birth at the Yocom hospital in Chariton.
Mr. Hass had been in failing health following a heart attack a year ago last February, but continued to carry on his work until a few weeks ago when his physical condition became so acute he was persuaded to remain at home and abandon all activity. His condition worsening, he was taken to the Yocom hospital about 10 days ago where the end came Thursday night.
When a young man, Mr. Hass taught school for two years at Allendale, Mo. In 1892 he entered the railway mail service, and located at St. Louis, his headquarters for five years when he worked the mail on a Wabash railroad assignment. In 1897, when he was transferred to the South Branch of the Burlington railroad, he came to Chariton and made his home in this city.
On September 3, 1899, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Morton Willhite, of Oxford, Worth county, Mo. To that union three sons were born: Lawrence, of Evanston, Ill., and Verne and Sumner, of Chicago.
In 1911 Mr. Hass resigned from the mail service and purchased the insurance agency owned by Maple & Crocker which he continued to own until the first of this month when he sold the business to B. R. Van Dyke.
Mr. Hass was affiliated with the First Presbyterian church of Chariton and served on the board of trustees. He was church treasurer for 21 years. He served several terms on the Chariton school board as a member and as the president of that body. For 35 years or more he was a director for the National Bank & Trust Co., and that institution's predecessors. He was a member of the Chariton Chamber of Commerce, the Chariton Gun Club and was a charter member of the Lake View Golf and Country club.
The deceased is survived by the widow, three sons, one brothers, A. R. Hass, of Chariton, and two sisters, Miss Eva Hass and Mrs. Belle H. Laughlin, both of Mt. Ayr. One brother, Curtis, passed away November 18, 1947.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Bonte Grussing from the Beardsley Funeral home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Burial followed at the Chariton cemetery.
