Frederick Abraham Rhodes, 66, a native of the Spaders Church community, and a widely known Harrisonburg barber, died unexpectedly Friday morning at 8:30 o'clock at his home in the Pleasant Valley community where he had resided since 1922. Mr. Rhodes, who apparently was in his usual health, returned home on Wednesday from a hunting trip that he had been on since last Saturday, and on Thursday he went to McDowell to hunt. He had gotten up and had eaten his breakfast as usual yesterday morning and was stricken at 8:15. His unexpected passing, fifteen minutes later, came as a shock to both his family and many friends. Mr. Rhodes had suffered a heart attack three years ago. A son of the late John J. and Mrs, Amanda Whitesel Rhodes, he was born on February 23, 1887 in the Spaders Church Community, where he spent the early part of his life. As a young man, he went to Washington where he resided for a period of eight years. In 1922, he moved to his present home in the Pleasant Valley Community where he was to spend the remainder of his life. Mr. Rhodes, who owned and operated the Rhodes Barber Shop in Harrisonburg for ten years, had more recently been engaged in the raising of poultry. Extremely popular with people of all ages, Mr. Rhodes had a pleasing personality and possessed an amiable disposition. He attended the Whitesel's Evangelical United Brethren Church. On May 12, 1914, he was united in marriage to Miss Malvina White, who survives him, together with three daughters, Mrs. Ellis (Elizabeth) Garber, Rockingham; Mrs. Arlie (Doris) Randolph, Clayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Bernard (Lucille) Shifflett, at home; a son, F. A. Rhodes, Jr., of Harrisonburg; eight grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Nolan Kemper, of Washington; two brothers, Howard E. Rhodes, and Glen V. Rhodes, both of Washington. A son died in infancy, three sisters, and two brothers also preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at two-thirty from the chapel of the Lindsey Funeral Home on South Main St. The Rev. Forest Racey will conduct the services and burial will be in the family lot in the St. Jacobs (Spaders) Lutheran Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be John E. Funkhouser, Harry R. Kaylor, John E. Simmons, Harold M. Early, Heber Earman, Allen Shaver, Odi Eye, and Walter W. Steele. Honorary pallbearers will be J. N. Liskey, Sam H. Callender, Homer W. Rhodes, B. L. Shifflett, Everette Tibbens, R.T. Salt, James Salt, Leonard Poole, Chauncey Patterson, Robert Robertson, M. M. Clark, and Olie Snyder of Washington.
