Rachel was a daughter of George McKee and Margaret Isabel Milne. She grew up in Peel Township, Wellington County, in Grey Township, Huron County, and in Flamborough East Township Wentworth County, Ontario. On October 16, 1881 in Dundas, Ontario, Canada she was married to Postel Dawson, a native of England and the youngest child of Robert Dawson and Hannah Postel. For many years she and her husband ran a boarding house in Rudyard.
