Postal was the youngest child of Robert Dawson and Hannah Postel. He was baptized "Postill Dowson" on April 4 1852 in Ruston Parva, East Riding, Yorkshire, England. He grew up in Beverly Township, Wentworth County, Ontario. On October 16, 1881 in Dundas, Ontario, Canada "Postel" was married to Rachel McKee, a daughter of George McKee and Margaret Isabel Milne.
They had at least three children together: Clara Isabelle who married Harry B. Bush then George F. Thornton; Josephine who married Fred G. Bush; and Rachel A. who married Joseph Pirutch.
For many years he and his wife ran a boarding house in Rudyard.
