Joseph F. Anthony married Martha Jane Stevenson, daughter of Hugh B. Stevenson. His father was William Anthony and was a native of Tennessee and died in 1865. Joseph came to Madison County shortly after his birth and located four miles east of the county seat. In 1849 he went to California by overland with many others to seek for gold. He was a soldier in the Mexican War; was colonel of his regiment and was in service about 2 years. He was a tiller of the soil and resided near the old homestead. He and his wife had 5 children; Edward D. (publisher of The Standard and attorney at law at Fredericktown, Missouri), Eliza, Julia, Sterling and Frank.
