Robert Cravens arrived in Chattanooga in 1851 and founded the East Tennessee Iron Company, with James Whiteside and others; he purchased 16,000 acres on Raccoon Mountain and began a coal mining business. By 1860, Cravens was wealthy and had a home on the side of Lookout Mountain. Serving as Gen. Joe Hooker’s headquarters, the home was destroyed during the Battle of Lookout Mountain. Cravens returned after the war, rebuilding the home with profits from the purchase and resale of army wagons.

At the age of 25, he married Catherine Roddy. They would have several children before her death in 1845. About a year later, he remarried Caroline Connyningham, the daughter of a Methodist church official. Daughter, Lydia, had married W.W. Anderson and another daughter, Nancy, had married J.P. McMillin
