Jeremiah Prendergast

Jeremiah Prendergast, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Bureau County died at his home in Arlington on Tuesday, December 6, 1927.

Mr. Prendergast was born in the County of Waterford, Ireland, Feb. 13, 1841. He was the fourth oldest and last living in a family of eight children. He came to this country sixty years ago at the age of twenty seven, after spending two years in Brooklyn, N.Y., with his sister, Mrs. Kathryn Kelly, he came west and settled in Bureau County where he took up farming, later sending to Ireland for his mother and brother, William, who became his partner. They lived happily with him until their death, William having passed way in 1908 and his mother preceding William in death ten years before. She was 82 years of age at the time of her death.

Mr. Prendergast was united in marriage to Kathryn Corcoran of County Waterford, Ireland in year 1879 and to them were born eight children. The oldest died in infancy.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, Mrs. Kathryn Prendergast, four sons, William M. and John of Arlington, Michael T. of Omaha, Neb. and Jeremiah F. of Peru, Ill; three daughters, Margaret, of Arlington, Mrs. James Farmer, of Spring Valley and Mrs. Martha (s/b Matthew) O'Brien, of Brooklyn, N.Y. Also eight grandchildren besides many relatives and numbers of friends.

Mr. Prendergast was a man of remarkable character and was active in all church and public welfare. He was an inspiration to all who knew him, being renowned for his many sterling qualities.

The funeral took place from the St. Patrick's Church with Rev. Father T. J. Fitzgerald officiating and interment was in the Calvary Cemetery, the plot of ground being chosen by him in earlier years and through his influence was purchased for the Catholic cemetery.
