Thomas Francis Prendergast was born in County Waterford, Ireland. His parents were John Prendergast and Mary Lyons. Thomas immigrated to the United States in 1869. He first settled in Brooklyn, New York where he worked in the meat packing industry.

Thomas married Bridget Shanley, a native of County Longford, Ireland on February 4, 1877 at Saint Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.

In 1881, Thomas, Bridget and their 2 oldest children, John and Mary, moved to Bureau County, Illinois where Thomas' mother and some siblings were living at the time. Four more children, Anna, Thomas, Jr., Michael and William were born to Thomas and Bridget in Bureau County.

Thomas died on 4/30/1922 at his home in Arlington and was buried on 5/2/1922. Thomas' gravestone mentions his birth year as 1845 while his death certificate and obituary both mention the year as 1844. In 2015, his baptismal record was located in Ireland and shows his actual birth year as 1843.

Thomas Prendergast

Thomas Prendergast, 77 years old, died Sunday night at his home in Arlington. He passed away at 11 o'clock from cancer with which he had been afflicted for a number years. He had been in a serious condition for about eight months.

The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. o'clock from the late home to St. Patrick's Church, where requiem mass was sung by the Rev. Father Fitzgerald. The interment was in Calvary Cemetery.

Mr. Prendergast had been a resident in Arlington and vicinity for the last 41 years. His life was spent in farming until his retirement six years ago. He was born and reared in Ireland, but came to this country as a young man. For a number of years he was located in New York, coming from there to Bureau County.

He is survived by a widow, four sons and a daughter, Mrs. Frank Neilan (s/b Nelan), of Arlington. The sons are John, Thomas, Michael and William, all well known residents of Arlington.
