Bernard Grant, 81, of 307 Fountain St., died Sunday at home. He was the co-owner of the former Crystal Market and previously the meat manager at two local food chains. Born in this city, he was a lifelong resident. He was a member of Sons of Israel Synagogue and the secretary and chairman of its cemetery. He belonged to Greater Springfield Freedman Post 26 of the Jewish War Veterans, the Disabled American Veterans, the Jewish Nursing Home and Kesser Israel Synagogue, where he was a board member. He was an Army staff sergeant during World War II. He leaves his wife, Ethel Grant; two sons, David L. of Westfield and Gary of Jerusalem, Israel; two daughters, Sandra Goldstein of Sharon and Shelley R. Grant of Springfield; three brothers, Philip of Longmeadow, Melvin of Springfield and Gerald of Northampton; three sisters, Eunice Kofsky of Longmeadow, Beatrice Bernstein of Holyoke and Jessie Kaiser of Holyoke; and nine grandchildren. The funeral was Monday at Harold R. Ascher & Son Memorial Chapel, with burial in Sons of Israel Cemetery . The memorial observance will be this evening at 307 Fountain St.
