"Nancy and Chris had 12 children, 9 lived to adulthood. Nancy never had an opportunity to attend school, however she did want her children to receive an education. She and her husband donated land from their farm for a country school near Appleton City, Missouri. The school that was built became known as the "Shoe School House". The school was built in the mid 1800's and was used for many years. A desk from the old school was saved in the home of Carl Shoe of Sedalia, Missouri. Carl is a son of William E. Shoe and grandchild of Chris and Nancy. ... The school house with the Shoe name stood for more than 100 years.
