Menno Helmuth, 88, of Kalona died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010 at Pleasantview Home following a lingering illness.

Celebration of life services were Sunday, Aug. 22, at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with Pastors Floyd Helmuth and Lloyd Helmuth officiating. Burial followed in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation was held Saturday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund for Pleasantview Home and East Union Mennonite Church has been established.

Menno Helmuth was born March 31, 1922 in Kalona, the son of Chris I. and Mary (Miller) Helmuth. He attended East Lincoln Rural School and was a member of East Union Mennonite Church. He was united in marriage to Dorothy E. Kreider at the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church on Feb. 11, 1951. Early in his life Menno worked at Gingerich Implement and as an auto mechanic in Iowa City. He was a mechanic at Farmer's Supply Sales, Inc in Kalona for 33 years from 1957 – 1990.

Menno enjoyed bowling in league and repaired balers in his retirement.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Kalona, one brother, Dan (Rita) Helmuth of Iowa City; two sisters, Lydia (Russell) Gnagey of Kalona and Martha Schrock of Arvada, CO; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding Menno in death were his parents, four brothers, Will, Andy, Eli and John, one brother-in-law, Art Schrock, and five sisters-in-law, Fanny Helmuth, Barbara Helmuth, Sarah Helmuth, Fannie Helmuth and Mary Helmuth.
