Mary Ann Townsend was the daughter of John Townsend Jr. b. Iowa and Barthena Thompson b. MO. She had the following brothers and sisters: Sarah E., Francis J.(girl), Elvira, Isham P., Thomas A., Hiram, and Martha Townsend.

Mary Ann "Anna" Townsend was married in Joplin, MO, Jan. 8, 1871, to William Arch Steeley. They moved to the Tahlequah area in 1874 and lived there for thirty years, before moving to Leach, OK.

She was born and raised in Jasper Co., MO. She and William had the following children: William Perry "Paul" Steeley, Eva Steeley Robbins, Mollie Steeley Rogers, Sallie (Sarah) Steeley Townsend Rogers Cline, John W. Steeley, James R. "Jim" Steeley, Alice Steeley Ridling, Parilee Steeley Post, Joel Mayes Steeley, and Emma Steeley Bowles.
