Mildred L. Schalla, age 95 of Iron River, MI, died Friday, August 13, 2010 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, MI.
Born March 26, 1915 in Crystal Falls, MI to early Crystal Falls settlers, Ole and Agnes (Olson) Oss, Mildred attended the Crystal Falls schools, graduating in 1932. She married Hartvick Hookanson on March 5, 1935 and the couple made their home in Bates Township, moving to Madison, WI in 1961. Hartvick preceded her in death in 1968.
She later married Joseph Schalla in 1970, and the couple made their home in Madison where she was employed by National Forest Products Research Laboratories prior to her retirement in 1979. The couple then returned to Iron River in 1979 to make their home. Joseph preceded her in death in 2003.
Mildred was an active long time member of Grace Covenant Church of Iron River and held several offices in the church. Her family and church were the center of her life and she enjoyed sewing, knitting and gardening.
She is survived by three daughters; Maxine Hookanson of Iron River
Bonnie (Bud) Rieckhoff of Carson City, NV
Joan Cleland of Boulder, CO
Six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren
Nieces and nephews
She was also preceded in death by her siblings, Harry Oss, Flora Johnson, Peter Oss, Mabel Carlson, Norman Oss, Evelyn Anderson and Clarence Oss.
Memorial services will be held Friday, August 27, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Grace Covenant Church, Iron River.
Interment: Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
The family suggests memorial donations to the Grace Covenant Church.
