Iron River, Oct. 19- Ole Oss, 81, well known farmer in Bates and Crystal
Falls, townships, died at 1:30 yesterday afternoon at the Bellin Memorial
hospital, Green Bay, where he underwent surgery for a gland ailment Monday.
Ill for several weeks, he was taken to Green Bay Sunday.
Born Aug. 11, 1869 in Norway, Europe, Mr. Oss came to this country alone
when he was 11 years old. For several years he worked on farms in Gillette,
WI area and in 1900 moved to Crystal Falls. For a few years he worked in
the woods and took part in some of the early pine drives down the Paint and
Menominee rivers.
He homesteaded a farm in the Fortune lake district and later established
another farm in Bates township, near the plains between Bates and Crystal
Falls.
For the last seven years, or after the death of Mrs. Oss, who died in 1942,
Mr. Oss lived with a daughter, Mrs. Mildred Hookanson, in Bates township.
He leaves four sons, Norman of Iron River, and Peter, Clarence and Harry, of
Crystal Falls township; and four daughters, Mrs. Mabel Carlson, of Iron
River; Mrs. Evelyn Anderson, of Waukegan IL; and Mrs. Hookanson.
There also are two sisters, Mrs. Christine Johnson, of Mansfield township,
and Mrs. C. Knutson of Grand Forks, N.D., 13 grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
The body is at the John Funeral home, where arrangements for the services
are being made. It is tentatively planned to hold funeral Saturday.
Mr. Oss was a veteran member of the Odd Fellows lodge of Crystal Falls.
