Due to the military conscription laws, Herman and Ernestine decided to leave Germany for the United States. They emmigrated with their seven children: Oswald (17), Herman (15), Lena (14), Milda (12), Albina (11), Richard (8), and Anna (2). The family of Gustav and Mathilda (Franz) Hetze and their children: Bertha (13), Liddy (10), Gustav Jr. (7), and Camilla (6m) went with them. The two eldest Hetze children, Adelheid and Marie, stayed in Germany. Sadly, Camilla died on board ship during the passage. They sailed from Bremen, Germany on 14 Apr 1882, Herman and Ernestine's 18th Wedding Anniversary, on board the ship 'Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm' arriving in New York City on 1 May 1882. Per the ship's passenger list another Uhlig, one Ferd Uhlig was also onboard believed to be Herman's older brother Friedrich.
It is not known what route or how long it took the group to reach Wisconsin, but there is record of the Uhlig's settling initially in the Town of Germantown just south of Pioneer Road on Hwy M across the road from Andraus and Elizabeth (Gierach) Wolff's homestead. In less than a year, Herman purchased the homestead farm on Western Avenue. The house was built about 1860 and made of fieldstone. The home burned in a fire about 1885 and was rebuilt by Herman and Gustav Uhlig, who was a mason by trade.
Herman and Ernestine had two children born in Wisconsin; Clemens and Elsa. Their 50th Wedding Anniversary was held on the 14 Apr 1914 with a large family gathering.
