HERMAN FRIEDRICK KARL UHLIG

Herman Friedrick Karl Uhlig, son of August Johann Friedrich and Karolina Hanna Christiana (Wagner) Uhlig, was b. 2 Nov 1839, Bernsdorf, (Chemnitz,) Saxony (Sachsen), Germany, married 14 Apr 1864, Adelsberg (Chemnitz, Sachsen, Germany), to Ernestine Juliana Schubert, daughter of Friedrich Gottlieb and Elenore Ann (Schirmer) Schubert, b. 9 Jan 1842, Adelsberg, (Chemnitz,) Saxony (Sachsen), Germany. Herman Uhlig, d. 30 Mar 1922, Cedarburg, Wisconsin and Ernestine, d. 14 Aug 1926, Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Both are buried in Immanuel Cemetery.

UHLIG FAMILY HISTORY

Little is known of the Uhlig family in Germany. However, additional information is being obtained through the East German Archives in Leipzig, Zentralstelle Fur Genealogie.

We do know that the Uhligs were farmers in the Bernsdorf area. Albert Uhlig and Herbert Uhlig of California and Nevada, come from Reichenhain, about one-half mile from Bernsdorf and have traced their roots to an additional 9 generations to the 1550's.

The East Germans did provide some information on Herman's father and grandfather. August had at least two sons, the first was Friedrich Johann August Uhlig, b. 5 Oct 1838 and the second was Herman. August and Karolina (Wagner) Uhlig were married 16 Apr 1837, St. Martins Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oberlungwitz. Karolina was the daughter of Johann Christian Wagner, also of Oberlungwitz, Saxony, Germany. August was the fourth son of Johann Gottlieb Uhlig.

CHILDREN & IMMIGRATION

Herman and Ernestine had five other children born in Germany, including at least one set of twins. They all died at birth or shortly thereafter. Richard Otto Uhlig was named after one of the twins that died.

Due to the military conscription laws, Herman and Ernestine decided to leave Germany for the United States. They emmigrated with their seven children: Oswald (17), Herman (15), Lena (14), Milda (12), Albina (11), Richard (8), and Anna (2). The family of Gustav and Mathilda (Franz) Hetze and their children: Bertha (13), Liddy (10), Gustav Jr. (7), and Camilla (6m) went with them. The two eldest Hetze children, Adelheid and Marie, stayed in Germany. Sadly, Camilla died on board ship during the passage. They sailed from Bremen, Germany on 14 Apr 1882, Herman and Ernestine's 18th Wedding Anniversary, on board the ship 'Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm' arriving in New York City on 1 May 1882. Per the ship's passenger list another Uhlig, one Ferd Uhlig was also onboard believed to be Herman's older brother Friedrich.

It is not known what route or how long it took the group to reach Wisconsin, but there is record of the Uhlig's settling initially in the Town of Germantown just south of Pioneer Road on Hwy M across the road from Andraus and Elizabeth (Gierach) Wolff's homestead. In less than a year, Herman purchased the homestead farm on Western Avenue. The house was built about 1860 and made of fieldstone. The home burned in a fire about 1885 and was rebuilt by Herman and Gustav Uhlig, who was a mason by trade.

The home today [1980] is owned by Floyd and Mary Lyneis. It has four bedrooms, two baths, family room with fireplace, a kitchen, and a dining and living room combined into a large gathering room with built-in wood burning stove. The family room was added about 1960. The rooms are unusually large and have high ceilings for a stone house.

Herman and Ernestine had two children born in Wisconsin; Clemens and Elsa. Their 50th Wedding Anniversary was held on the 14 Apr 1914 with a large family gathering.

OBIT (Cedarburg News, 30 Mar 1933)

Herman was in robust health until 12 years before he died. He was seized with stomach trouble. He grew worse with the years. He was never in bed until the last day. He died at 5 p.m. Thursday evening, at the age of 82 years, 4 months, and 28 days.
