"This is a photo of the picture of Peter Steffey which hangs in City hall of Williamsport, MD among all the "Burgesses" who have served from 1840 until now.

Although there were Burgesses from 1824, photography was not perfected until the 1840's. I would guess that this picture was taken 10 years after Peter served (1840-41) It was furnished by descendants of his son William.

Peter was born (1782) during the Rev. war and died (1864) before the end of the Civil War."

The above is handwritten on the back of this photo, by Marguerite Steffey Snyder and was sent to her 1st cousin, Chalmer Lowell Steffey who loaned it to me. In 1964 Marguerite wrote her book "The Steffeys In American - From Colonial Days To The Space Age". She died 30 January 2011 at the age of 102 years, 6 months, 9 days. Peter was her great-great grandfather & she was the 1st cousin of my husband's father.

Peter Steffey was my husband's g-g-g-grandfather & this photo hangs in City Hall next to his Grandson, Edward. Peter served as Burgess in 1840-1841. He built and owned quite a bit of property in Williamsport, Washington Co, Maryland.

Peter came to Williamsport, MD in 1795 from Southeastern PA possibly to work as a carpenter's apprentice for Philip Steffey who is possibly his father or Uncle. Jonathan Tritle bought a lot next to Philip in 1799.
Jonathan's daughter, Catherine and Peter started to date and were according to church records a Peter Steppee and Catherine Trytle and were married December 13, 1804.
Peter was one of the Builders of Conococheague Bank, constructed in 1804 and still stands at 26 East Salisbury Street. The bank was conceded to Washington County Bank and in 1845, William A Steffey(Peter's second son) purchased the spacious building and converted it into a home. It was owned by his descendants until about 1922, and still stands--see picture under William. Another property that Peter purchased which is now City Hall and a property next to it was owned by William's son, Edward and still known as "the Old Ed Steffey Home".
Peter served as Burgess of Williamsport from 1840-1841 and as Mayor in the same years.
When Peter's estate was settled in 1868 the following children were known to be alive. Jonathan(63); William(61); Lewis(58); Emily(50); Charles H.(49); Benjamin(47);
Sarah(43); Jane(40).
Peter served as a Burgess and Mayor in Williamsport from 1840-1841. The picture hangs in City Hall of Williamsport, MD among all the Burgesses who have served. It was furnished by descendants of his son, William.
