John worked as a laborer before joining the US Army in March 1899. His three-year enlistment expired while he was serving with the 19th Ohio Infantry in the Philippines. Honorably discharged with the rank of corporal, he returned home to the States and was hired by the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Rail Road (C&EIRR) as a fireman and engineer. In June 1904 he married Anna Stillwagner in St Louis, Missouri. They had two children, Russell and Calvin. In early 1915 deteriorating health compelled John to quit the C&EIRR and move the family to a farm they had bought in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He died of multiple sclerosis at the Michigan Soldier's Home in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at age 53.

John stood five-feet-ten-inches and had black hair, brown eyes, a fair complexion, and a birthmark in the center of his chest. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen and Enginemen, and the I.O.O.F.
