Alice John was born and raised in central Illinois. On August 12, 1903 she married Harvey Smith, whose first wife, Nellie Householder, had died in 1900 sometime after bearing their third child.
In addition to having taken on the raising of Harvey's three children (Okley, Elton and Robert), Alice and Harvey also raised five children of their own (Marvin, Alice 'Jr', Vena, Hazel and Dale).
This farming family moved from Illinois to Minnesota in 1912, initially to Austin, and then settled in the Farmington / Dakota County area in 1919.
Alice's family name was officially "John" but was often rendered as "Johns". The newspaper writeup about their 50th anniversary, in 1953, specifically stated "John".
