JAMES WILLIAM STUMP
James W. Stump was born Sept. 25, 1845, near Libertyville, in Jefferson county, Iowa, and died Dec. 25, 1929, on Christmas night at 8:30 o'clock, on the farm on which he had spent almost his entire life of the age of 84 years, 3 months. He volunteered and joined the service of the Civil War on Jan. 4, 1864, at the age of 19 years, and was honorably discharged from Co. H 3rd Iowa Cavalry, on Aug. 9, 1865, at Atlanta, Goergia, and he was among the last of his company to answer the roll call.
He was the son of George and Mary Stump and there were five children in the family and all have preceeded him in death.
He was married to Harriet E Martin on Dec. 16, 1868, and they have lived to see their 61st anniversary. To this union eight children were born, six are still living, Elmer of Ottumwa, Iowa, Perry, Amaziah, Arch and Charlie, all living near the home of their father, and Mrs. Anna Lanman of Bonaparte, Iowa, Ellen dying in infancy and Mrs. Alice Creek, who died in 1912.
Besides the faithful wife and ciildren, he leaves one half brother, Jasper Bartholomew of Douds, Iowa, thirteen grandchildren, one step grandson, fifteen great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his going.
He joined the M.P. church at Union, about thirty five years ago and has served as Sunday School Superintendent and class leader at different times as long as his health permitted.
He was always one of the faithful few, and will be sadly missed in the community as he always had a friendly smile and a handshake for all who knew him and he was a man who made friends wherever he went,
The home once bright and happy is now overcast with gloom and sorrow, without the presence of the ever loved and thoughtful father and companion. "Well done, thou good and faithful servant; enter thou into the house of the Lord."
The funeral was held at the home on Friday, Dec. 27, at 11 pm in charge of Rev. Barber of Eldon, and buried at the Fell cemetery near Libertyville, six grandchildren acting as pall bearers; Harold, Floyd, Roy, Russell Stump and Van and John Creek.
