OBITUARY
Pioneer Teacher Is Dead
Toru Herndon
, pioneer McCurtain County Indian school teacher retired to the family home in Valliant, died Wednesday night in the McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel.
Mrs. Herndon taught for many years at Wheelock Academy in McCurtain County until it closed in 1955.
She was transferred to and taught at Jones Academy near Hartshorne until her retirement and return to Valliant in 1973.
She is author of a short history of Wheelock Academy, now out of print.
She was born Jan 4, 1900 and maintained her home in Valliant all her life. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Wilson Herndon of Chickasha; two daughters, Pat Bailey of Klamath Falls, Ore., and Austine Scott of Chico, Cal.; one sister, Eleanor Floyd of Valliant; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
