James was the son of Hosea Belew and Wilmuth "Milly" (Murphy) Belew. He married Sarah L. "Sallie" Capps on September 12, 1867, in Gibson County, Tennessee.

James and Sallie were the parents of Monroe Thomas, James M., Johnnie L., Mary R., Jackie C., James Dennis, and Wilma Caltha Belew.

His Death Certificate lists his birth in 1848, while his gravestone lists 1844. In the 1850 census record, he was four years old. The 1900 census records his birth as Feb 1847.
