Baptized in St. Michael and St. Perran Church, Perranuthnoe, Cornwall, England. This was the parish chuch about a mile from his birth place, the village of Goldsithney. He was a copper miner in Cornwall. He came to US in 1846, first to the lead mining region of S.W. Wisconsin. He traveled down Mississippi, across Panama and up to California for the Gold Rush, at least by 1851. He returned by same route in 1854 to marry Margaret Beavan Moralee. He went back to California by same route the same year, and his wife followed in 1855 when the railroad across the US was completed, making the journey easier. William staked and bought claims for an English investment firm and then managed several mines for them. They had 9 children, 4 of which survived to adulthood, all males. Died of complications of a stroke and of old age.

The cemetery plot was bought initially when William's wife's mother died. The plot contains the remains of William and Margaret Johns and of her parents Michael and Sarah Beavan Moralee. The plot also contains the ashes of the Arthur and Samuel Johns, two of William and Margaret's sons, Samuel's wife, Arthur's daughter, a brother of Margaret Johns and one of his sons.

His mother, Grace (Ford) Johns (dau of Robert Ford and Grace Williams)died in Goldsithney, Cornwall, England in 1828 and is buried in that area, exact location unknown.
