Raymond LeRoy "Sonny" DuBois was born to Raymond Charles and Josephine Christine (Beadle) DuBois 9 July 1929. Josephine died 17 March 1935 of bronchial pneumonia.

When Sonny was fifteen, his uncle Russell's home near Napoleon, Michigan caught fire from a cook stove explosion in 1944. Sonny ran out of the burning building to find a burlap bag to put out the flames that had engulfed his aunt Mary DuBois. He looked up and saw Mrs. Evelyn Gilloz in the second story window with her baby, Dick Gilloz. Sonny said he could catch the baby, so Evelyn dropped the baby into the safe arms of Sonny and then jumped out of the window, breaking her leg. Sadly, Mary DuBois died at Foote Hospital due to injuries related to the fire.

Sonny joined the U.S. Army after the Allied Forces victory in WWII. He was on leave from training to be a military cook at Fort Knox and headed home to Ypsilanti, Michigan to propose marriage to his girlfriend. He was killed when the car he was a passenger in encountered heavy smoke of a burning vehicle from a previous incident; the drivers view obstructed, crashed head-on into a truck near Botkins, Ohio on 7 August 1948. Private DuBois was age 19.

Newspaper articles, letters written by Pvt. DuBois, an obituary and the Ohio death certificate were used to construct this biography.
