John D. Arnett was born October 10, 1842 in Hamilton County, Tennessee. His father was a merchant. According to his biography that appeared in History of Tennessee (Nashville, Tennessee) found on Ancestry.com, John D. Arnett attended Cumberland College and "after the war closed graduated there in 1867, then entered the law department and graduated in 1869". He married Mattie Moore of Hernando, DeSoto County, Mississippi on January 3, 1872, in Franklin County, Tennessee (Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002, Ancestry.com). They were parents of one son, George Moore Arnett. John and Mattie were members of the Presbyterian Church. According to the biography, John owned "the largest store and stock of goods in Tiptonville, besides a cotton-gin and 800 acres of land" and "for twelve years filled the office of circuit court clerk" (1874-1886). His first wife died in 1895 and he then married Blanche Miller. They were parents of William Grigsby Arnett, who was born October 8, 1897.
