Daughter of George Sr & Elizabeth Hodgson, who were of the earliest settlers at Elm Hill (later Thurman now Johnsburg) perhaps around 1789. About 1800 she was married to John William Bates. Little is known of J W, besides he fathered at least 2 sons, William & George and abandoned the family soon after 1810. Although evidence points to him being the son of old John Bates of Bolton, Revolutionary War Veteran.
Margaret "Peggy", it is supposed lived with her aging parents who helped raise her children. It is not believed she remarried and perhaps lived her last years in Troy, NY, where her son George settled and in 1829 her son William married. She lived until ca 1849, before the 1850 census (unless missed), but late enough to have a tin-type photo taken.
