Russell Eugene Shol, 82, of Fergus Falls, died on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, one hour short of his 83rd birthday at the Lakeland Hospice House of Fergus Falls.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1927, in Fergus Falls, the son of Carl and Tillie (Kugler) Shol, and was the youngest living child of 11. Russell grew up on a farm near Weetown and attended country school at District No. 207, later No. 1495. He also attended Underwood High School until he was needed at home to help his father with the family farm.
On Aug. 27, 1950, he married Esther Grabarkewitz at Trinity Lutheran Church. Esther died in 1992.
He purchased, moved and remodeled several houses and developed RusDic Manor with his friend, Dick Stock. He began working at Otter Tail Power Company on May 16, 1951, and retired on Aug. 31, 1990, after 39 years as a service representative and lineman.
On Nov. 26, 1994, he married Vivian (Anderson) Grewe at Stavanger Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls.
Russ enjoyed hunting large and small game and talking about his hunting trips. He had scrapbooks with the details and pictures of his many trips. He also loved woodworking where he would cut logs into lumber with his sawmill. He then dried and finished it into gun cabinets as well as cradles for his granddaughter and great granddaughter. He also enjoyed his scroll saw projects.
He was involved in many area civic organizations such as Kiwanis, Lions, Elks, and the Salvation Army. He was past President of the Pebble Lake Golf Club, and was active in Pheasants Forever and Ducks Unlimited. He was also very involved in the organization and building of Hope Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir with his wife. Esther.
Russell enjoyed helping friends and relatives when and wherever possible and wanted to be remembered as "someone who cared."
He is survived by his wife, Vivian; a sister, Hazel Magdich; two sister-in-laws, Pearl Shol, and Lorraine Shol; a brother-in-law, Ben Bachmeier, all of Fergus Falls; three stepchildren: David (Kathi) Grewe of Alexandria, Paul (Jan) Grewe of Windsor, Colo., and Laurie (Scott) Nelson of Winona; a step son-in-law, Mike (Cindy) Hubbard of Fargo; eight step grandchildren: Matt (Kara) Hubbard, Nicole (Joe) Sever, Joel (Karly) Hubbard, Brent (April) Grewe, Laura (Eric) Loberg, Erin and Erick Grewe, and Rebecca Geisler; a step great granddaughter, Alexis Hubbard; and special nephews, Gene (Ruth) Shol, Jim (Kathy) Barnum; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
