According to a 1888 biography about John's son, Lemuel Black (History of Mercer County, page 1007), John Black "was a sailor for fourteen years, and was under command of Lord Nelson in the battle of Trafalgar, October 21, 1805, and the scars which he received in this famous struggle were ever afterward visible."

John Black's naval service has been verified in the Trafalgar Roll at ageofnelson.org and nationalarchives.gov.uk/trafalgarancestors. John Black at the time of Trafalgar was 20 years old, born in Leicester, Leicestershire,Great Britain. He was a Landsman on the HMS Conqueror. His name appeared in HMS Conqueror's pay book on August 19, 1804. The ship at that time may have been in Salvador, prest.

John married Dorothy Winson (born October 8, 1799) at Duffield, Derbyshire, Great Britain on September 7, 1818. Their children born in Derby, England were: John, born January 15, 1819; Hannah, born August 24, 1820; Stephen, born October 8, 1821; Jesse, born July 20, 1823; Jeremiah, born August 29, 1825; Sarah, born April 6, 1827; Mary, born February 16, 1829.

The Black family immigrated to the United States in 1829, and settled in what was then Coolspring Township, Mercer County where his son Lemuel Black was born on May 12, 1839. In 1888 Lemuel Black still lived on the same farm which by then had become part of Jackson Twp. John Black's name is listed as head of household in the 1830 United States Census for Coolspring, Mercer County Pennsylvania.

Other Black children born in America were: Joseph, born October 24, 1830; Lydia, born July 9, 1833; Sarah, born August 15, 1835; Priscilla, born March 30, 1837)

John Black was killed "by a log falling on him at the raising of a barn for a Mr. Forker, in Cool Spring Township."

John's son, Jeremiah Black, served with the Union Army during the Civil War in Company I, 57th Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers and died of disease on July 30, 1862 at Harrison's Landing Virginia after the Peninsula Campaign. Jeremiah's body was not returned to the family. He is presumed to be buried in an unmarked grave somewhere in the vicinity of Harrison's Landing.

Jeremiah's widow, Mary(Sergeant)Black, is also buried in the same Old Coolspring Cemetery as her father-n-law.stone broken and lying flat as of 1979 survey
