SALT LAKE CITY, (UP)— The Dean of Men at the University of Utah, 66-year-old John L. Ballif, Jr., one of the most popular figures in Utah higher education circles, died last night of a heart ailment.
Ballif was stricken at his home just across the street from the university campus and died eight hours later at a hospital.
Ballif was a native of Logan, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Ballif, and grew up in Rexburg, Ida., where in 1918 and 1919 he served as mayor.
He had been on the University of Utah staff since 1922 and been Dean of Men since 1937.
In addition to acting as counselor to thousands of University of Utah men students, Ballif was one of the Redskins' staunchest athletic fans. Sometimes alone, he always was on hand when Utah teams were leaving the campus or returning from athletic wars to give his encouragement.
He married Cora Hansen in 1913 in the Salt Lake Temple of the Latter-Day Saints church, of which he was a life-long member. His widow and two children, John L. Ballif, III and Mrs. Marsha Midgley survive.
Other survivors are two brothers living in Provo, George S. and Ariel S. Ballif, and three sisters, Mrs. Elsie B. Barrett of Boise and Mrs. Harriet Berrett and Mrs. Claimond Yearsley of Menan, Ida. Ballif served an LDS mission in France in 1908 and maintained such an active interest in French affairs that the French government awarded him an "Officier d'Academic" degree in 1951.
