Obituary from Independence Bulletin Journal, 26 Jan 1911
Contributed by: Findagrave Volunteer #47047601

Neva V. Coates was born in Delaware county, Iowa, September 1, 1872. When about 4 years old she went to live with her aunt, Mrs. Wm. Durkee, in Muscatine, and remained with her until she was 12 years of age. With this exception her whole life has been spent in Delaware and Buchanan counties. When about 15 years of age she was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal church on [in?] Rock Prairie and doubtless through the years when her heart and hands were full of those things that come to a mother, though the privilege of attending the church was mostly denied her, this faith sustained, strengthened and comforted her.

She was married to Ranford Emery Cook at Manchester, December 24, 1891, and they began housekeeping in the home in Fremont township that will now miss her gracious presence so much. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, four sons and two daughters, James, Blaine, Helen Margaret, Donald Dean, Clarence Coates, Clyde Ranford, and Mary Elizabeth. The eldest being seventeen and the youngest a baby 1 year old. Of other relatives she leaves a father and stepmother; two brothers, one sister, two half brother[s] and two half sisters. The brothers and sisters are Charles Coates, Mohal, N.D.; Clarence Coates, Cherokee, Iowa; Mrs. Sadie Coon, Manchester; Ernest Coates, Dolan [sic], S D.; Frank Coates, Manchester; and the Misses Ruth and Izora Coates, of Delaware. Besides is the very large circle of friends and neighbors who feel that while their grief cannot be as great as that of her own loved ones, yet it is real and hard to bear because they also have sustained a great loss.

It is the testimony of all that Mrs. Cook was a good woman; a splendid and sympathetic neighbor. But she was preeminently a mother and wife, and to those in her home she ministered with unremitted care and patience until that dreadful thing, a cancer, came to sap her strength and to take her life. An operation last summer was thought at first to have been successful, but later it became necessary to perform another. This was done at Finley hospital in Dubuque, and then last Thursday it was found necessary to perform still another. This she survived but two hours, passing away shortly after one o'clock at the age of 38 years, 4 months and 5 days. The funeral services were help on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Whitney Methodist church, conducted by the pastor; and the body was laid away in the Fleming cemetery within sight of her late home.
