David Dickson was born in Pendleton County South Carolina, the son of William Dickson and Elizabeth Dickson. He was Captain in the Revolutionary War. He was appointed and served as General of the Georgia State militia. After his military services, General Dickson served as Justice of the Peace in Greene County Georgia, from 1788 until 1790. He was in the state legislature in 1789 for Greene County Georgia. By 1792 he was justice of interior court and commissioner of Greene County Academy also in 1792. In 1796 he was elected Representative for Hancock County Georgia until 1799. In 1802 he was Justice of interior court in Jackson County Georgia, then served in the Senate for Jackson County Georgia until 1806.

Capt. David Dickson died in this county (Fayette,Georgia) in 1830, aged 79 years. He joined the standard of American Independence in February, 1775, at the Snow Camps, on Reedy River, at the taking of Colonel Cunningham and his Tories. In 1776, he commanded a volunteer company, under Gen. Williamson, in the Cherokee Nation, against the Cherokees and Tories. In 1777, he brought a company of minute-men to Georgia, and was stationed on the frontiers. In 1778, he and his company went with the American army to take St. Augustine, and served in the artillery. The taking of St. Augustine miscarried; the minute-men were
discharged, and he returned to South Carolina, joined the standard of Independence, and continued in the service of his country to the end of the war.
