Axel Adrian Johnson was born as Axel Adrian Johansson Bäckman on October 17, 1871 in the parish of Sideby on the western coast of Finland, a Swedish-Finn community, the son of Johan Jakob Gustafsson Bäckman (1846-1933) and Wendla Sofia Abrahamsdotter Högback Bäckman (1847-1896).
Axel emigrated from Finland to Michigan in 1890, where he may have initially worked in the iron mines near Ironwood in Upper Michigan. After he relocated to Norway (ca. 1896), he worked in the iron mines for 19 years, and subsequently opened a carpentry shop.
He married Vendla Carolina Carlson on Nov 26, 1898 in Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Norway, Dickinson County, Michigan, who had immigrated to Michigan in 1896. She was born on May 18, 1878 in Petalax, Finland, the daughter of Karl Gustaf Andersson Westerback and Beata Josefsdotter Westerback.
