Mathilda Fransiska Beckman Finney was born "Mathilda Fransiska Johansdotter Bäckman" on September 10, 1884 in the parish of Sideby (at the Kaars Farm #4). Sideby is a Swedish-Finn community on the western coast of Finland in Ostrobothnia, located between Kristinestad and Björneborg.

Five of the seven children in her family who lived to adulthood emigrated from Finland to America. Her parents, Johan Jacob Gustafsson Bäckman (b. December 20, 1846 in Storå; d. January 05, 1933 in Sideby) and Wendla Sofia Abrahamsdotter Högback Bäckman [b. August 20, 1847 in Sideby (Högback Farm); d. July 24, 1896 in Sideby], had nine children:

•Hilma Sofia b. 1870 married Viktor August Eriksson Pellfolk in Sideby in 1893. They both died in Sideby in 1923.

•Axel Adrian b. October 17, 1871; immigrated to Michigan, July 1890; married Vendla Carolina Carlson b. 1878, who immigrated to Michigan from Petalax, Finland. Axel changed his name to Axel Adrian Johnson after he immigrated to the USA. He died on February 23, 1944 in Norway, Dickinson County, Michigan. Vendla died on September 17, 1953 in Norway, Michigan.

•Hilda Cecilia b. 1874 in Sideby; she relocated to Föglö, Åland Islands in 1897, where she gave birth to twin sons, Gustaf and Alvar on December 31, 1899; they died in March and April 1900. Ellis Island records indicate that she emigrated from Åland in July 1900, arriving at Ellis Island from Liverpool to New York (Cunard Line - SS Campania). She settled in St. Louis County, Minnesota, where she lived until her death on January 31, 1925.

•Johan Viktor b. 1876, d. 1879, Sideby.

•Frans Oskar b. 1878, immigrated to Florida in September 1899, died in Florida on July 4, 1904 after an extended illness.

•Johan Viktor b. 1881, enlisted as ship's carpenter at the Åland Island Mercantile Marine office at Vårdö at the age of 18 on December 6, 1899; he immigrated to the USA at Ship Island (near Biloxi, Mississippi) in 1905, at the end of his first term of service. He changed his name to John Victor Johnson after he immigrated to the USA.

•Josef Henrik b. 1883, d. 1886, Sideby.

•Mathilda Fransiska b. 1884, immigrated to Minnesota in 1903, married Alfred John Finne, a Swedish immigrant (1875-1911).

•Josef Arnold b. 1887 in Sideby; married Aino Juliana Fredriksdotter Sjöblom from Vasa, where they lived after their marriage He died in Vasa on January 14, 1947; she died there on December 01, 1963.

At the time of Mathilda's birth, the Finnish people had faced extreme political and economic hardship for many years. A combination of Russian rule, forced military conscription, and harsh economic conditions had forced many Finnish people to emigrate. Mathilda's older brother and my grandfather, John Victor "Victor" Johnson (born "Johan Vicktor Johansson Bäckman") paid for Mathilda's fare from Finland to the USA in 1903. Because his funds were limited as a ship's carpenter with the Åland Island Mercantile Marine, he could only afford to purchase a ticket in steerage (or third class), which was crowded and uncomfortable. Like many other Scandinavian immigrants, Mathilda settled in Minnesota, where her older sister Hilda Cecilia had settled in 1900.

Mathilda married a Swedish immigrant, Alfred John Finne, in 1904 in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota. They had two daughters:

•Ellen M. Finney, born July 07, 1905 in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota; died November 13, 1997 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. She married Quintin Leslie Frances Lindquist ca. 1927 in Minnesota; born July 15, 1905 in Minnesota; died December 17, 1987 in St. Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. They had three children (Vernon, Barbara, and Dennis).

•Hildur Finney, born September 19, 1907 in Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Minnesota; died October 12, 1978 in Brainerd from complications related to Parkinson's Disease.

Alfred John Finne died in 1911, leaving Mathilda widowed with two young daughters. Mathilda relocated to Florida briefly with her daughters, Ellen and Hildur, to help her brother Victor Johnson [my grandfather] with his three small children after his first wife, Eva Pearl Adams Johnson, died from a massive infection, possibly uremic poisoning, in Cedar Key on March 26, 1915 after the birth of their third child. Victor, the foreman of the Tilghman Cypress Company in Lukens (near Cedar Key), Florida was now a 34-year-old man with three young children to raise. Mathilda and her daughters returned to Minnesota to their home at 1619 Norwood Street in Brainerd.

Mathilda worked at the Crow Wing County Courthouse for many years. Mathilda's daughter Hildur never married and remained at home with Mathilda. She worked as an accountant at the Brainerd utility company.

Mathilda remained in contact with her father Johan Jakob Gustafsson Bäckman until his death in 1933 in Sideby. She also maintained contact with her younger brother Josef Arnold Bäckman (1887-1947) and his wife Aino Juliana Fredriksdotter Sjöblom Bäckman (1889-1963).

Thanks to her daughter Hildur's constant care and attention, Mathilda lived a long life. She died in Brainerd on September 5, 1967, five days before her 83rd birthday.

Unfortunately, Hildur did not fare as well as her mother with regard to her health. She developed significant health problems in her early 60s when she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. She died on October 12, 1978 at the age of 71 from complications of this disease.
