Kate was born in Westmoreland Co., PA, the second child of John Varner and Elizabeth [maiden name unknown]. She married George Grube on September 7, 1843, presumably in Jefferson Co., PA. She died on the home farm in Bell Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.

Kate's parents moved from Westmoreland County to Jefferson County in 1833, purchasing a large tract in Young Twp. (now McCalmont Twp.). George and Kate were the parents of 10 children: one son and one daughter died young, and the other 8 grew to adulthood, marrying and raising families of their own. The last to marry was their youngest child, Tirzah, who married Elmer Mahan in 1891. The Mahan's inherited the George Grube homestead and took care of George and Kate until their deaths.

The ten children of George and Kate (Varner) Grube were:
1. John Henry Grube, husband of "Louisa" Sarah Louisa Dougherty, Sarah Catherine Coffman and Catherine Jane (Smith) Hadden.
2. Calvin Jones Grube, who died at age 3 years.
3. Sarah Cornelia Grube, who died at age 8 months.
4. Silas Wright Grube, husband of Martha Louise Frederick.
5. "Ann" Barbara Ann Grube, wife of Joseph Dougherty.
6. "Elizabeth" Mary Elizabeth Grube, wife of Ross Williams.
7. Willis Webster Grube, husband of "Lillie" Lillian May Garrett and "Gladys" Nellie Gladys Berry.
8. Oscar P. Grube (whose name is recorded as George Ausker Grube in the family Bible), husband of Maude Gillespie Covel.
9. Wallace Elmer Grube, husband of "Ella" Sarah Ellen McBride.
10. Tirzah Katherine Grube, wife of Elmer Algernon Mahan.
