The Varner family moved from Franklin Co. to Westmoreland Co., PA, being enumerated there for the first time in the 1820 census. John married Elizabeth [maiden name unknown] about 1820, probably in Westmoreland Co., PA. According to the Kate Scott History of Jefferson Co., PA (1888) p. 730 (sketch of David Grube), the Varner family settled in Jefferson County, PA in 1833.
The 1860 census shows John and his wife living in McCalmont Twp., Jefferson County, PA, and it is assumed that he died there in 1866.

I walked up to Jno Varners J Welker preached Jno Varners funeral. then I drove my team and wagon up to between P.B.Weavers and Fred Rummels then I walked up to the grave yard (Rhoads) where they buryed Jno Varner then I walked the widow Varners got dinner then Emily and I walked home... [written in margin] Jno VARNER buried"
