John Varner was born in Franklin Co., PA, the son of Abraham (Abram) Varner. The name of his mother is unknown. The Varner family moved from Franklin Co. to Westmoreland Co., PA, being enumerated there for the first time in the 1820 census. John married Elizabeth [maiden name unknown] about 1820, probably in Westmoreland Co., PA. According to the Kate Scott History of Jefferson Co., PA (1888) p. 730 (sketch of David Grube), the Varner family settled in Jefferson County, PA in 1833.

The 1860 census shows John and his wife living in McCalmont Twp., Jefferson County, PA, and it is assumed that he died there in 1866.

The dates of birth and death for the family can be found in the family Bible:

[Note: all Bible entries through 1835 were written with the same pen (ink) and in the exact same handwriting, meaning these early entries were all recorded in the Bible at the same time; the entries from 1838-1866 were all written with different pens (inks), but the handwriting is the same, which implies that Elizabeth Varner, the mother, wrote all of these Bible entries herself, except for the last one which reports her own death. This Bible passed from John and Elizabeth Varner to their daughter, Elizabeth (Varner) Grube, from her to her daughter, Effie (Grube) Curry, from her to her daughter, Olive (Curry) Smith, who gave the Bible to her great-nephew, Don Ludwig in 1977. It remains in his possession.]
