Edith R. Highlands, 71, of Newburg, died Sunday morning at the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Jan. 25, 1908, in Harrisburg, she was a daughter of the late James G. and Margaret E. Koser Kendig. She was the widow of Edward L. Highlands, who died April 14, 1979.

Mrs. Highlands was a member of the Newburg First Church of God, where she served for many years as a teacher in the Sunday School, and as a church pianist and organist.

She was a graduate of Cumberland Valley State Normal School and later received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Shippensburg State Teachers College. She was a teacher in area one-room schools in Franklin and Cumberland counties. Later with the establishment of the Shippensburg Area Joint School District, she was employed as a fourth grade teacher at the Hopewell-Newburg Elementary School, having retired in 1971.

Mrs. Highlands was a member of the Pennsylvania and National Retired Public School Employees associations and a member of the Dessie Priscilla Rebekah Lodge 100 of Newburg.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth E. Highlands, Newburg; two sisters, Mrs. Donald (Caroline) McCrone, 502 Linn St., Harrisburg, and Mrs. Upton (Beulah) Funk, Shippensburg R. D. 2; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Newburg First Church of God with the Rev. K. Hull Byers, her pastor, officiating. Friends and relatives will be received at the Fogelsanger Funeral Home, 112 West King St., Shippensburg, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, and at the church one hour prior to the services Thursday. Internment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
