Reported MIA after leaving the airfield at Finschhafen, New Guinea, for a test flight of an F-5E-2 aircraft (a photo- reconnaissance version of the well- known P-38 Lightning), but he never returned. A possible crash site was identified in 1950 near Koilil Village in Morobe Province, Papua, New Guinea, but his remains were not recovered until 2003 and not positively identified until 2008. They have been returned to his family and will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery.
